Executive and Specialist Consultant in Mission-Critical Data Centers and IT

South African born, Lee Smith has been in the digital infrastructure industry since 1989. He has a wide range of experience, ranging from IT infrastructure management through to Mission-Critical Operations and many other associated disciplines. Lee was instrumental in the planning, design, establishment, QA and successful commissioning the first Uptime Tier-IV Facility Certified data center in the southern hemisphere – a 6,000m2 (64,500ft2) data center in Johannesburg, South Africa. He has established himself as a mission-critical data centre consultant for more than a decade. He focusses on providing a better understanding about the practical challenges, opportunities, implications and other related aspects of data centers.

Lee’s mission-critical expertise is mainly on Data Center Design, Operations and Strategy and Transition. His direct involvement in design and operations consulting and training, especially within Africa, gives him a unique and well-established perspective on the challenges and opportunities related to data center industry workforce development.

As a member of the Infrastructure Masons Education Committee, he is passionate about the development of skills and education within the data centre industry, having delivered training and education to more many professionals across the globe. He is a mentor to others and enjoys sharing his knowledge and insight.

Lee is a mission-critical data center consultant and executive. He has gained a vast amount of knowledge and understanding with regard the design, establishment and management of data centers. Passionate about this subject matter, he now focuses on providing others with a better understanding about the strategy, practical challenges, implications and other related aspects of data centers, irrespective of size, design or complexity.

He was the first person in Africa who obtained accreditation as a Certified Data Center Expert (CDCE®). Lee obtained his Accredited Tier Designer (ATD) certification from The Uptime Institute in December 2013. Lee is an expert panelist and has presented at numerous data center and IT conferences in Africa, Middle East, Europe and North America. He is the managing director of DS Datasmiths, an ICT and data center consulting firm in South Africa.

In June 2018 he relocated to the United States, close to Data Center Alley in McLean, Northern Virginia, where he lives and works by furthering his professional growth and passion within the data center environment. He recently founded USA-based “DataCenterDNA”, a consulting firm that focusses on aspects that impact the operational sustainability of mission-critical data center sites as well as education development and growth, especially with organizations who wish to develop and grow the industry and their own presence on the African continent. Through this company, and his South Africa-based company, Lee provides consulting and specialist data center services globally in numerous subjects and disciplines related to mission-critical, upper-echelon data centers and operations. He has recently received his United States work authorization and is available for professional employment and engagements both in the USA and globally.

He holds a number of professional accreditations. Lee is an expert panelist and has presented at many data center and IT conferences across the world.
